Orchitis is a condition characterized by inflammation of one or both testicles. Symptoms of orchitis include testicular swelling, fever, nausea, vomiting, testicular pain, testicular tenderness, blood in semen, and swollen lymph nodes in the groin. Orchitis is caused by:
1. Either bacterial or viral infections, including sexually transmitted infections
2. Congenital urinary tract abnormalities or catheter insertion into the penis
3. Not being vaccinated against mumps
4. Frequent urinary tract infections
5. Urinary tract or genital surgery
6. Multiple sex partners, and
7. Unprotected sex
If untreated for a prolonged period, orchitis may lead to infertility, testicular atrophy, and epididymitis.
