Physical Characteristics

– Profuse, watery, gushing stools, often rice-water in appearance
– Stools are greenish, odourless, acrid, sometimes mixed with flakes
– Violent simultaneous vomiting and purging, with great prostration
– Cutting, colicky pains in the abdomen as if “knives” twisting intestines
– Sensation of sinking and emptiness in the stomach after stool
– Extreme coldness of skin and extremities, with pale or bluish, sunken face
– Cold, clammy sweat on the forehead accompanying collapse

Modalities and Concomitant Features

– Cramps and tonic spasms beginning in hands and feet, spreading over body
– Intense, unquenchable thirst for large quantities of very cold water (often vomited immediately)
– Profound weakness and rapid sinking of vital forces after each stool
– Sensation of a lump of ice on the vertex or across the scalp
– Worse from cold, damp weather and slightest motion; better from warmth and firm pressure
– Mental collapse: anxiety, fear of death, possible delirium during bouts of diarrhoea
