Osteomyelitis is an infection of the bone and bone marrow that causes inflammation and destruction of bone tissue. The infection can be caused by bacteria, mycobacteria, or fungi. The pathology of chronic osteomyelitis is the study of the causes, mechanisms, and effects of a progressive inflammatory process that results in bone destruction and sequestrum formation. Chronic osteomyelitis can be caused by contiguous spread from infected tissue or an infected prosthetic joint, or by bloodborne organisms. The infection tends to occlude local blood vessels, which causes bone necrosis and the local spread of infection.
