Osteomyelitis is an infection in the bone caused by bacteria or fungi. Diagnosis of osteomyelitis includes a physical examination of the affected bone to check for any tenderness or swelling. Your doctor may suggest certain tests to confirm the diagnosis.
Some of the tests that may be used to diagnose osteomyelitis include blood tests, imaging tests such as X-rays, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Computerized Tomography (CT) scans, and bone biopsy. A blood test can reveal elevated levels of white blood cells and other factors that may indicate that your body is fighting an infection. A bone biopsy can reveal what type of germ has infected your bone.
