There are several types of fractures, including:
1. Stable fracture, where the broken ends of the bone line up and are barely out of place,
2. open (compound) fracture, where the skin may be pierced by the bone or by a blow that breaks the skin at the time of the fracture,
3. Transverse fracture, which is a straight break across the bone,
4. Oblique fracture, which is a diagonal break across the bone,
5. Comminuted fracture, where the bone shatters into many pieces; and
6. Avulsion fracture, where a muscle or ligament pulls on the bone, fracturing it.
