Neisseria gonorrhoeae, also known as gonococcus, is a Gram-negative non-motile diplococcus that is intracellular. It is an aerobe and grows well at an optimum temperature of 37°C on chocolate agar. It produces small, grayish, and granular colonies with slight umbonation on Modified Thayer Martin medium, circular, convex, grayish, or colorless colonies on New York City medium, and opaque, convex, and gray-white colonies on other media. It is positive for cytochrome oxidase.
