Tag: sterilization

Sterilization refers to any process that removes, kills, or deactivates all forms of life (particularly microorganisms such as fungi, bacteria, spores, and unicellular eukaryotic organisms) and other biological agents such as prions present in or on a specific surface, object, or fluid. Sterilization can be achieved through various means, including heat, chemicals, irradiation, high pressure, and filtration. Sterilization is distinct from disinfection, sanitization, and pasteurization, in that those methods reduce rather than eliminate all forms of life and biological agents present. After sterilization, an object is referred to as being sterile or aseptic.

An operation theater room should be aseptic, highly sterile, and restricted. Proper ventilation with 20 air changes each hour, separate doors for entry and exit, and sliding doors to minimize air currents are some measures that can help prevent and control infection in operating theaters. The operating theater complex should be properly zoned based on the levels of cleanliness, the presence of microorganisms, and the types of procedures carried out. There should be separate areas for preparation and disposal, scrubbing and gowning, and for the storage, sterilization, assembly, and washing of materials and equipment.

In addition to these measures, fumigation is a method that can be used to sterilize an operating theater room. Formaldehyde gas (bactericidal, sporicidal, viricidal) is widely employed as it is cheaper for sterilization of huge areas like operation theaters.

There are several methods to sterilize needles, including boiling water, steam, and flame sterilization. For example, you can sterilize a needle by boiling it in water for at least 30 minutes. Another method is to use steam, which is one of the most widely used and effective methods for sterilizing needles. No living thing can survive direct exposure to saturated steam at 250 degrees Fahrenheit (120 degrees Celsius) for longer than 15 minutes.

Cotton can be sterilized using an autoclave or by using gamma irradiation. These methods are typically used in medical or industrial settings.

There are several methods of sterilization, including physical, radiation, ultrasonic, and chemical methods. Physical methods include moist heat (such as steaming), dry heat (such as in a hot air oven), and filtration. Chemical sterilization can be achieved with substances such as ethyl alcohol, mercuric chloride, and sodium hypochlorite.
