Self-defeating behaviours are thoughts, habits, or actions that work against a person’s own goals, wellbeing, relationships, or success, even when the person consciously wants a positive outcome.

    Common examples

Self-defeating behaviour What the person wants How it defeats the goal

    1. Procrastination: To succeed-Delays necessary action
    2. Self-sabotage: To achieve a goal-Creates obstacles or gives up prematurely
    3. Excessive perfectionism: To do things well Prevents completion or creates fear of failure
Avoiding challenges-To improve Prevents learning and growth
    4. Negative self-talk: To feel confident Reinforces feelings of inadequacy
Seeking repeated reassurance-To feel secure Can increase dependence and anxiety
    5. People-pleasing: To maintain relationships- -Neglects one’s own needs and may create resentment
    6. Impulsive behaviour: Immediate relief/pleasure Produces longer-term problems
Repeatedly choosing harmful relationships-To have companionship Maintains an unhealthy relational pattern
    7. Giving up after minor setbacks: To avoid disappointment-Prevents achievement

    Psychological mechanism

    A typical cycle is:

    Trigger → thought/belief → emotion → behaviour → short-term relief → long-term negative consequence → reinforcement of the original belief

    For example:

    > “I might fail” → anxiety → avoid the task → immediate relief → task remains unfinished → “I can’t succeed” becomes stronger.

An important point is that self-defeating behaviour is usually not deliberate self-destruction. The behaviour often provides some immediate psychological benefit—such as reducing anxiety, avoiding embarrassment, obtaining reassurance, or maintaining a familiar situation—but creates a disadvantage later.

    In clinical assessment

It is useful to distinguish self-defeating behaviour from self-harm. Self-defeating behaviour can be relatively ordinary and unconscious (e.g., procrastination or avoidance), whereas self-harm specifically involves intentional injury or harm to oneself.
