Hysteria is a term that was used in the past to describe a wide variety of symptoms, including physical symptoms that had no apparent organic cause. In the 19th century, female hysteria was considered a diagnosable physical illness in women. It was believed to be caused by a variety of factors, including sexual frustration, a wandering uterus, and nervousness. However, the diagnosis of hysteria fell out of favor in the early 20th century and is no longer recognized as a medical condition. Today, symptoms that were once attributed to hysteria may be diagnosed as conversion disorder or somatic symptom disorder.
