Characteristic Uvula Changes
– Uvula greatly elongated and pendulous
– Oedematous, puffy, translucent appearance
– End often nearly spherical—“like a drop of fluid or jelly” ready to fall off
Sensations and Functional Complaints
– Sensation of a large lump hanging from the palate
– Intolerable rawness, roughness, and scraping in throat
– Frequent hawking or cough as if something touches the glottis
– Sticking, burning pain on swallowing
Concomitant Throat Findings
– “Curtain” of soft palate likewise swollen and pink
– Vesicular eruptions on pharynx and uvula
– Throat dry, irritable; constant desire to clear mucus
Modalities
– Worse
– Warm drinks or covering the throat
– Swallowing repeated saliva or mucus
– Better
– Cold applications or cold drinks
– Uncovering throat and open air
These uvular signs—marked pendulous swelling, translucent oedema, scraping pain and cough—are hallmarks pointing to Rhus toxicodendron when repertorizing acute throat conditions.
