Mastitis is an inflammation of the breast tissue that can lead to infection and flu-like symptoms. The symptoms of mastitis may include:
– Breast tenderness or warmth to the touch
– Breast swelling
– Thickening of breast tissue, or a breast lump
– Pain or a burning sensation continuously or while breastfeeding
– Skin redness, often in a wedge-shaped pattern
– Generally feeling ill
– Fever of 101 F (38.3 C) or greater
Mastitis is most commonly seen among breastfeeding women, but it can also occur in women who aren’t breastfeeding and in men. It is caused by bacteria entering the breast, milk that is trapped in the breast, or a blocked milk duct. If left untreated, mastitis can lead to a collection of pus (abscess) in the breast.
