Diagnosis of sciatica involves physical examination, imaging tests, and previous medical history. During the physical exam, a healthcare provider might check muscle strength and reflexes. For example, you may be asked to walk on your toes or heels, rise from a squatting position, and lift your legs one at a time while lying on your backÂł. Imaging tests like X-rays of the spine may reveal overgrowth of bone. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the spine will provide a detailed image of bone and herniated disks. CT scan of the spine provides a detailed image of the spinal cord and nerves. Electromyography (EMG) can confirm nerve compression caused by herniated disks or narrowing of the spinal canal.
