Carbo Vegetabilis; Charcoal is a lightweight black carbon residue produced by strongly heating wood in minimal oxygen to remove all water and volatile constituents. In the traditional version of this pyrolysis process, called charcoal burning, often by forming a charcoal kiln, the heat is supplied by burning part of the starting material itself, with a limited supply of oxygen. The material can also be heated in a closed retort. Modern “charcoal” briquettes used for outdoor cooking may contain many other additives, e.g. coal.

This process happens naturally when combustion is incomplete and is sometimes used in radiocarbon dating. It also happens inadvertently while burning wood, as in a fireplace or wood stove. The visible flame in these is due to the combustion of the volatile gases exuded as the wood turns into charcoal. The soot and smoke commonly given off by wood fires result from the incomplete combustion of that volatiles. Charcoal burns at a higher temperature than wood, with hardly a visible flame, and releases almost nothing except heat and carbon dioxide (One kilogram of charcoal contains 680 to 820 grams of carbon, which when combined with oxygen from the atmosphere from 2.5 to 3 kg of carbon dioxide).

In homeopathy, Carbo Vegetabilis is considered a powerful remedy for the collapse stage of cholera, especially when the patient is on the brink of losing vitality. It’s often described as a “last-resort” or “life-saving” medicine in desperate conditions.

Here are the key symptoms that indicate Carbo Veg in cholera cases:

    🌬️ Collapse and Weakness
    – Extreme prostration and exhaustion
    – Patient appears almost lifeless, too weak to move
    – Cold body, especially extremities (icy cold hands and feet)
    – Cold breath, cold tongue, and cold sweat, especially on the forehead
    – Thread-like, rapid pulse or pulse barely perceptible

    🌀 Gastrointestinal Symptoms
    – Involuntary, cadaverous-smelling diarrhea
    – Vomiting with loss of vital fluids
    – Distended abdomen from gas, with relief after belching
    – Burning sensation in stomach and rectum
    – Putrid discharges from stool and breath

    😷 Facial and Skin Signs
    – Sunken cheeks and eyes, giving a Hippocratic face
    – Blueness of lips and skin due to poor capillary circulation
    – Cold sweat on the face and forehead
    – Skin may appear mottled or cyanotic

    🌬️ Respiratory and Air Hunger
    – Desire for fresh air, wants to be fanned constantly
    – Oppressed breathing, must have windows open
    – Quickened respiration, despite cold body

    🧠 Mental and Emotional State
    – May be conscious or unconscious
    – Indifference or lack of reaction to surroundings
    – Fear of ghosts or aversion to darkness (in general Carbo Veg profile)

Carbo Veg is typically prescribed when the patient is in a state of collapse, with coldness, weakness, and poor circulation, and when other remedies have failed to revive them.

Great question! Carbo Vegetabilis is often referred to as the “Coramin of Homeopathy” because of its powerful action in reviving collapsed states, much like how Coramine (a synthetic respiratory stimulant) was historically used in conventional medicine to stimulate respiration and circulation during emergencies.

    Why the Nickname?

Coramine was once used to treat:
    – Respiratory failure
    – Circulatory collapse
    – Fainting spells

Carbo Veg, in homeopathy, mirrors this role by:
    – Reviving patients in near-collapse with cold extremities, weak pulse, and air hunger
    – Acting as a “corpse reviver”—used when the patient is almost lifeless but still responsive
    – Stimulating oxygenation, improving venous circulation, and relieving cyanosis

🧠 Mental & Physical Picture of Carbo Veg

    – Extreme exhaustion, both mental and physical
    – Desperate need for fresh air, wants to be fanned constantly
    – Cold sweat, bluish skin, and fainting
    – Indifference, apathy, and fear of death

    🧾 Summary Table

    | Feature |

    1. Use: Collapse, fainting, poor circulation (Carbo Vegetabilis); Respiratory stimulant in emergencies (Coramine)
    2. Action: Improves oxygenation & venous return (Carbo Vegetabilis); Stimulates respiration & CNS (Coramine)
    3. Nickname Origin: “Corpse reviver” in homeopathy (Carbo Vegetabilis); Emergency revival drug (Coramine)
    4. Mental State: Apathy, despair, craving fresh air (Carbo Vegetabilis); Not applicable

So, the nickname is a nod to its life-saving potential in homeopathic practice—especially in cases of collapse, shock, or extreme weakness.
